Night Skincare Routine – How to Include Serums and Face Oils

Skin

At the end of a long day, a skincare routine needs to be simple enough that you will actually follow it. Washing your face and applying a suitable moisturiser can be a useful starting point. Serums and face oils are additions to consider when they serve a purpose for your skin.

The confusing part is knowing which bottle goes where, and whether you need both. Product names do not always help. A serum can be watery or oily, while something called an elixir may be a face oil. Read the formula and directions before planning your evening steps.

Start With What Your Skin Needs

Think about what you want to address before buying another product. Is your skin feeling dry? Does your current routine leave it uncomfortable? Are you already using a prescribed treatment?

A serum may offer ingredients aimed at a particular concern, while an oil can help reduce moisture loss and soften the skin. Neither is essential for everyone, and using both is not automatically better.

If your current cleanser and moisturiser suit you, keep them while trying one addition. That makes it easier to notice how your skin responds. For ongoing acne, irritation or changing pigmentation, seek individual advice rather than repeatedly adding products.

Cleanse Gently Before Applying Anything

Wash your hands, then remove makeup and cleanse your face with products suited to your skin. Follow the removal instructions for waterproof makeup instead of rubbing harder around the eyes.

Use lukewarm water and your fingertips with a gentle cleanser. Scrubbing with a rough towel or brush is unnecessary and can irritate the skin. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a soft towel.

Your face does not need to feel tight or squeaky afterwards. If it regularly does, review the cleanser and how you are using it. A toner is optional; it does not need to become another compulsory purchase.

Choose One Serum With a Clear Purpose

When choosing a natural serum, look beyond the wording on the front of the bottle. Read the ingredient list, texture description and instructions. Natural ingredients can still irritate skin, so the label is not a promise of universal suitability.

For example, a lightweight hydrating formula serves a different purpose from an exfoliating serum. You do not need several products simply because each promises a different benefit.

Apply the amount recommended for your chosen formula. More product does not necessarily mean better results, and it may leave an uncomfortable layer.

Check whether the directions specify damp or dry skin. Avoid assuming that advice for one serum applies to all of them. If you use prescription skincare, ask your prescriber where an optional serum fits before changing the routine.

Decide Whether a Face Oil Belongs

A face oil may appeal if you enjoy its texture and your skin tolerates the ingredients. It is an optional step, and it does not necessarily replace a moisturiser containing ingredients that attract and retain water.

Old School Rituals describes its kumkumadi face oil as an overnight product. Its directions specify two to three drops on a cleansed and toned face before sleep, followed by rinsing the next morning. These are directions for that particular formula, not a standard dose for every facial oil.

The ingredient list includes almond oil, sesame oil and several essential oils. Check these against known allergies or sensitivities before use.

If your skin is oily or prone to breakouts, an additional oil may be unnecessary. Choose according to the formula and your skin’s response, rather than assuming everyone needs an oil at bedtime.

Put Your Products in a Sensible Order

For a basic evening routine, begin with cleansing, apply a suitable serum if you use one, and follow with moisturiser. A lightweight, water based serum generally comes before richer layers.

Face oil placement depends on the formulation and its instructions. Some routines place an oil before moisturiser, while others use it afterwards. Follow the product guidance or ask for clarification if the combination is unclear.

An oil based serum may already fill the role of your facial oil. Check before adding another oily layer just to complete a list of steps.

Apply products gently and allow each layer to settle as directed. There is no need to invent long waiting periods unless the instructions require them. Keep prescriptions in the order your clinician recommends.

Introduce New Products Slowly

Try one new product at a time. Starting a serum and an oil together makes it harder to identify which one caused a problem if your skin reacts.

Before applying a new cosmetic across your face, test it on a small area. Dermatologists recommend a small spot on the inner arm or elbow, with twice daily testing for seven to ten days. Use the normal amount and follow the usual contact time.

This check can reveal some reactions, but it cannot guarantee that a product will suit your face or prevent breakouts.

Keep a short note of when you started a new product and how often you used it. A simple record is more useful than trying to remember every change several weeks after the purchase.

If you develop redness, itching or swelling, wash the product off and stop using it. Seek medical advice for a severe or persistent reaction. Do not keep applying it because you expect discomfort to mean it is working.

Make the Routine Easy to Repeat

Keep your evening products together and leave the experimental extras aside. On busy nights, return to the basic steps that already suit your skin instead of rushing through several unfamiliar layers.

Notice comfort and tolerance before judging a product by morning brightness. Results depend on the ingredients and the concern being addressed; there is no single overnight timetable.

In the morning, follow the cleansing directions for your overnight products and include appropriate daytime sun protection. A manageable routine, with clearly chosen additions, is easier to understand and adjust than a shelf full of competing bottles.
